Eileen,

Like you, I have a writing background but no connections to CEO's on the cutting edge of technological innovation. That is exactly why I decided to become a small business columnist for both Examiner.com and Topix.net. And, since I don't have all the time in the world to do research on what may be newsworthy, I decided to entice the newsmakers in the small business sphere to send me their press releases. This is a wikinomics approach. I am uplifting small businesses, but having them do some of the work. Consequently, my column is actually a "team" effort and hopefully a "win/win" collaboration. I bet there's a Small Business Examiner there in Derby, KS that would welcome a press release about your business. Why not write something up and see if the writer is interested? If he's not interested, send the press release to me. I will gladly turn anything you write into a news story.

Which reminds me, have you ever worked with a team on a project through an online employment service? I am talking about an online service that issues W-2's at the end of the year. None of this 1099 stuff. Well, I came across a California service called ODesk.com. It's a very clever service. It's not simply for freelance writers. It's for anyone who has online access, a skill and the ability to put a price on that skill on an hourly basis. Believe it or not, the service actually encourages people to work in "teams.'

What ODesk has done is make virtual employment possible. By that, I mean you are not really an independent contractor. If you were an independent contractor, you would need a business license, county tax receipt, etc. But, with ODesk, you do the work, get paid by direct deposit and have a W-2 sent at the end of the year. There are no business records for you to maintain. ODesk handles all that for you.

I encourage you to take a look at it and tell me what you think.
