It's true. It really does make a difference to lift up "the other guy" first. Twitter has taught many of us this just by using the service. Twitter does you no good at all UNLESS you start out by following someone else...first. It is by becoming a good follower first that you begin to develop a following of your own.

Foursquare does this, too. But, it simply is not quite as obvious. You can actually put businesses INTO the system. Then, become the "Mayor" of their business and then inform them via email of what you have done FOR THEM and encourage them to tell their friends to "check in" at their new venue with their own cell phone.

With your computer you can check in at locations around the world. You do not need to physically show up at every venue where you check in. I am on my way to become the Mayor of places of my choosing - from a McDonalds and Burger King to the Coconut Creek City Hall to the Pentagon. If I can find an address for a location that is important to me, I can become that location's Mayor.

Why bother to become a mayor of a place where you do not even live? Because you may have a desire to one day do some business with them. And, contributing to their success in garnering more "foot traffic" just might be a good way to demonstrate to them that you offer REAL VALUE.
